Race & the Cultural Industries in France:

On Thursday 8 October 2026 at 5:00 PM CET (11:00am EST), Karim Hammou and Emily Shuman will present the recently published special issue of French Cultural Studies on race and the cultural industries in France. 

With contributions covering the audiovisual sector, the music industry, children’s literature, stand-up comedy, and television series, the special issue explores the ways in which race, understood as a social power dynamic, structures both the functioning of the French cultural industries and the formal qualities of the works they produce.

Karim Hammou is research fellow at the CNRS, director of the Centre for Sociological and Political Research in Paris (CRESPPA). His research deals with the history of racialisation in French popular music, the sociology of commodification of minority status in cultural industries and the transnational circulation of hip-hop.

Emily Shuman is Assistant Professor of Francophone Cultures at Radboud University (Nijmegen, the Netherlands.) Her research deals with questions of race, gender, and sexuality in contemporary French popular culture.
